Engineers need to be clear, concise and rational in their ability to make decisions and this is done through structured thoughts. From what I understand, it’s a way you can make well informed decisions using a process that utilizes your potential in order to arrive at an actionable plan that would appeal to the stakeholders. Being able to think critically:
· Allows for one to develop a process that’s consistent of well-planned and researched ideas in order to present the best course of action or recommendation.
· Means to be able to produce decision quality work that only needs further approval and not change from superiors.
· Eases stakeholders and superiors that your work comes from a place of critical thought and allows for an iron-clad representation of your work due to research and rationale put into it.
· Accounting for all aspects of a decision which means accounting for assumptions too. We need to understand all assumptions and biases as they will impact any decision that will be made.
· Habitualises your process which means your ideas are consistent and easy to follow as well as leading to a more professional stance within the organization.
That being said, there are different methods of thinking we can utilize as engineers that I will highlight below.
