The 5 Ws and an H

Writer: Irfaan HaffejeeIrfaan Haffejee

The five W's and an H method allows us to simplify a problem by asking 6 specific questions in order to arrive at the solution that's easily understandable. this can further help us find the root cause of the problem post op the questions are as follows:

· Who?

· What?

· When?

· Where?

· Why?

· How?

We ask ourselves the questions such as ‘who’ are the users and what characteristics do they display. Which are the most important user groups for the product we're designing. We can then ask ‘what’ do the users do and ‘what’ task does the product accomplish. We need to understand the tasks at hand in order to have the most efficient design. We can then ask how do they perform those tasks and the details to which this happens. Basically, asking how helps us truly understand the ‘What’ stage. ’Where’ can describe where other people when they use the product or the actual physical environment in which they are in when they use the product. When do they use the product all how much time do they have to use the product will dictate how intuitive the user experience can be. Lastly, and equally as important is ‘why’ are they using the product what are they trying to accomplish the reasoning behind why the user is using something allows us to design specifically for that market
